When you made the decision to come to university there were probably a lot of reasons that played a part – Leaving home for the first time, meeting new friends, nightlife, getting a degree…

A survey by NUS showed that 79% of students go to university to ‘improve job opportunities’…Was this one of your reasons?!

FROM A YOUNG AGE YOU WOULD HAVE WANTED TO BE SOMETHING WHEN YOU GREW UP….

Whatever career it was back then or has developed into now, there are some core skills you need to give yourself the best chance at any job. These are known universally as ‘Employability Skills’.

‘a set of attributes, skills and knowledge that all labour market participants should possess to ensure they have the capability of being effective in the workplace – to the benefit of themselves, their employer and the wider economy’

In simpler terms, employability skills are those generic skills everyone needs to be successful in any career. Such skills include problem solving, teamwork, communication, self-management and basic numeracy to name a few. All these plus a positive attitude will ensure you get far in gaining the employment you are looking for.

It is important that you study hard and get the best grade possible, however you can know the most intricate areas of your course, but those details alone can’t land you your dream job.

With the current economic climate employers need to see more than a good degree to pick the perfect candidate. Therefore employability skills will almost certainly be something employers will test as part of their selection process. Remember they underpin success in you working life. So looking to the future, you’ll want to develop them as far as you can and be able to back that up with evidence.
