The majority of students come to Uni to get a degree/diploma/certificate. However, most are leaving with a not-so-welcome extra; thousands of pounds worth of debt. This is a problem that has faced students for many years, and it is generally excepted that living off very little funds is all part of the 'student experience'. However, the current economic climate and 'credit crunch' is only going to cause the problem to worsen. Many students are facing extra financial hardship because they are not aware of the help that is available to them. Likewise, advice on budgeting and how to organise finances may help to reduce the volume of debt that a student accumulates. And although budgeting may not sound like much fun- staying in every night because you have no money is no fun either!
Due to the vastness of the student debt problem, UWIC SU has decided to launch a 'Students Debt Awareness' Campaign. The campaign will run over the current academic year, with focus on a week of events and activities to be held at the beginning of next term. The majority of students greatly underestimate expenditure such as food and bills. The campaign will aim to make students more aware of the costs they face and provide information on budgeting so that they don't over-spend. Likewise a key aim of the campaign is to provide studetns with on the help that they are entitled to. This includes grants, bursaries and scholarships that exsist to help students facing financial difficulty. Many of which currently go un-claimed by eligible students.
Throughout the week of campaigning , the students union will also run a number of activites related to student debt, in order to draw attention to the financial problems students face. These activities are likely to include soup kitchens, giveaways and discounts at the SU shops and bars. This will accompany financial information and advice being provided throughout UWIC.
If you have any ideas for events/ activities you would like to see throughout the campaign week then please email hobrien@uwic.ac.uk. If you have any other queries please do not hesitate to contact us here at the students union.
