Hello and welcome to 2011!
08/11/10
The madness of Freshers, enrolment and induction was over in a blur and September slowly disappeared out of view. The priorities for October were twofold:
1. StARs and StARs training
StARs
Recruitment for course reps ended in mid-October, thanks so much to all the StARs who volunteered for the position. After the recruitment it was time for training. On Saturday 23rd October more than 50 StARs met at the Campus Centre to learn exactly what being a StAR entailed and also to meet each other and have some fun. After a morning of workshops (and a free lunch) everybody went outside for leadership and team building exercises in the afternoon. Thanks again to all those who made the event, we had a lot of fun and it was great to meet you all.
Learning & Teaching Committee
Learning & Teaching Committee is a forum where staff and course reps discuss matters specifically relating to the academic output of the CSM. Unfortunately this meeting was held during reading week, which made it hard for StARs to attend. However, I will give you a quick summary of the student-related points discussed:
Blackboard
Progress is being made in resolving the problems related to these issues. In the case of blackboard the reasons for the trouble lie outside of the CSM and staff are working tirelessly on behalf of students to get everything fixed.
Next month:
November will see the first Staff-Student Liaison Committee meeting of the year. This forum will allow course reps and staff to discuss any problems that are currently present within the CSM. Communications Committee will also be holding a meeting where staff and students will discuss ways in which the CSM can provide activities and events for the benefit of students.
Finally…
CV writing
These sessions are completely free of charge and are an excellent of enhancing your personal development. You even get a certificate, which you can show a potential future employer!

Till next time…

New Year, New Beginning
September has flown by and already its been busy within the Cardiff School of Management (CSM).
For once it wasn’t just the freshers who were walking around looking lost and confused at the beginning of a new year. The new CSM building is a fresh start for everybody (students and staff) and for people who still have nightmares of Colchester Avenue it is a very welcome change.
The new academic year also brings changes to Student Representation. The SU has launched a bigger better StARs programme this year and all courses will require at least one representative. The deadline for recruitment is Friday 15th October so if you want to become a StAR or want to find out who your course StAR actually is, please get in touch.
StARs aren’t the only issue on the agenda at the moment. At the time of writing the SU is currently holding a referendum on the subject of a Student Activity Fee. This topic is important and will change the student experiences for the many thousands of future students that will attend UWIC.
Being a student is all about striking a balance between working hard and playing hard and it is important that you feel comfortable and confident as a UWIC student. If you have any questions about anything at all (no question is too strange or stupid) please email or if you see me around campus come over and have a chat.
Thanks,
T

Hope the holiday has left you refreshed and motivated for the year ahead. As I write this there are only 9 weeks of teaching left within the CSM until THE END OF THE YEAR!! So if you are planning on doing well come May/June you better start concentrating now if you weren’t already.
On Monday 7th February (which is also my birthday, send all presents to the usual address) the SU will launch an awareness week. Five days in which the SU wants you to know exactly how you can make the most out of the SU and the services they provide.
One of the big SU initiatives is the LED (Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Development) programme. This programme offers students free sessions with a professional training company to work on things such as CV writing, job interviews, presentations and leadership skills. If any of you have seen the sequel to Wall Street you may be familiar with Gordon Gekko’s assertion that this generation of students are the NINJA generation (No Income, No Job or Assets). The job market is tough but the cream always rises to the top so if you want to do yourself justice in the job market, the LED programme will be a massive help. Sessions are held at Llandaff and more information is on the UWICSU website, so get involved!
Any questions or problems, I am (as ever) available via email, the CSM facebook page or if you see me walking around campus just stop and say hi.
Ciao… x

Just wanted to recommend the Leadership Employment Development (LED) programme to you. This initiative organised by UWIC SU allows students to attend workshops run by a professional training company on topics such as:
Job interview technique
Leadership
Presentation Skills
For those of you that haven’t met me yet, I’m Theo and this is where I’ll be posting info and insight on a monthly basis.
