Hey Guys!
Hope you all have had an awesome Christmas and that your new year is going well! The main event kicking of the start of this term is SU awareness week it starts the week commencing 7th Feb 2011. The purpose of this SU awareness week is to raise the profile and awareness of the SU, so keep you eyes open for events taking place over the campuses, to get involved with.
Cardiff Nightline, a confidential listening and information service run by students for students, is recruiting new members to volunteer. It also looks great on your CV and helps you develop skills.
Those of you who have deadlines or exams at the start of term, good luck. Just to remind you...... any problems you have, just get in touch!!!! It's a hard time at the moment in the School of Art and Design and myself and the SU are here to support you!!!

Merry Christmas all,
Hope you’re all enjoying this festive, but stressful time of year!!!
The student Activity Fund is still ongoing and in debate on whether it will go ahead or not, but I will keep you up to date with this.
I’ve also attended two LED sessions; Perfect Presentation and Effective CV Writing and found them amazingly beneficially, so get involved in that!
Staff student liaison meeting has come and gone, I saw a few of you there, but would have liked more, we disclosed matters such as: Car parking, water machines, prices of food, computers for rendering, LED and problems with Canteen. We need you there for you to have your say.
I also went to a National Students Survey meeting last month, we discussed the graduating student satisfaction whilst being at university and reps were involved and suggested ways on how to improve the student experience.
Recently I have been liaising with the canteen staff, as I know the canteen has been a major concern on the Howard Gardens site this term. Next year there will be monthly meetings to improve it.

Hey Guys,
We had an amazing StAR’s training day on Saturday 23rd which was a huge success and hopefully gave you all the skills that you require to be a StAR whilst having loads of fun, I know I enjoyed it and learnt some valuable new skills, so thank you to all the StAR’s that came to that.
Tuition fees are a main issue at the moment with them set to rocket up in cost for next year and even more for the following years, look out for petitions to sign.
StAR’s, don’t forget about the Staff student Liaison meeting taking place in Llandaff on the 15th November at 4-.00-6.00, please try at make it if you can.
Movember is taking place this month. Students have to grow a moustache for the whole of November, to hopefully raise as much money as they can for The Prostate Charity and Everyman, the number one cancer affecting men. Even though it’s kicked off now, there are activities to get involved with: Mixed Tag Rugby (14 Nov) and the Shave off (30th Nov), or to take part get in touch with Nichola James nejames@uwic.ac.uk or drop into Tommy’s Bar where there’s a charity box for your donation.
I’m currently looking at the situation that we have with the canteen at present, with them not providing hot food as they used to and the lack of choice, there’s a meeting due to take place and I will let you know when I hear more.

Hey, This is where I’m going to keep you up to date on what’s happening in Howard Gardens .
After a tiresome but amazing freshers, I hope you have all found your feet and are getting stuck into every part of uni life. There are some really good opportunities available to you, from IMS (Intra-Mural Sports) to the LED initiative, check out the website for more details. And don’t forget to make the most of the time your at university, by joining clubs and societies.
I’m still recruiting StARs, so if you haven’t already signed up for this opportunity get in touch or talk to your course director. It looks really impressive on a CV, improves your skills and makes you more involved in the student experience. The deadline for this is Friday 15th of October. Thanks to all the StARs that are already out there. On Saturday the 23rd of October there will be a training day, which will prepare you for your role, you get to meet other StARs, the School Representatives and Union Staff, have a free lunch and have some fun with the outdoor training activities we have planned. There’s only a 100 spaces for this day, so contact me to sign up for the training day.

Hey I’m Ruth Foster, you’re representative for the School of Art and Design and a 2nd year BA Ceramics student.
I’m here as a line of contact and a voice for you guys to get your opinions heard by the academic staff and the Students Union. Any problems that you have be them big or small please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!! Also any ideas for change or improvements that you have about the school would be more than welcome.
Also to all the STARs and wanna be STARs out there, you’re a major part of my role, so anything you need help with or are unsure about get in touch……so freshers get involved, ask your lectures about STARS.
Remember I’m here for you guys to make your experience one to remember, so if anything is wrong or you want to change ask!
Anyways enjoy you time here at UWIC ………..trust me it will fly.

Over the last month, I’ve attended a Vice Chancellor Board meeting and a meeting of the SU trustees, all where I’ve tried to put you guys first.
I’ve also had a meeting with Gaynor, about the future plans of the Cardiff School of Art and Design, with course closers it’s more important than ever to get in touch with me, I know this is a very unsettling time for a lot of you, so any questions then do come find me or send me an email! I will do my best to keep you all informed!
With the cost of tuition fees only going up and the about of Jobs going down, employability is a scary thing to think about once you have left the comfy surroundings of university that’s why the LED innovative is an amazing opportunity not to be missed so get yourselves signed up to the Fresh Baked courses that there offering!!!
So get involved with all the opportunities, and I hope all your academic work is going well, enjoy Movember!!!!!
This all links nicely to what I’m up to at the moment. The SU are holding a Referendum to propose an Activity Fund to be brought into place for next year’s intake 2011/2012. The initiative is to improve the students experience at UWIC. But this can only be brought into action by you, so your votes really count, the voting is taking place now! So you will see me about with my little black ballot box and other members of the union collecting votes. so come find me or conact the SU for more information.
But keep checking out this website as it will keep you up to date with everything that is going on in the SU.
