The Magic Numbers
Clwb Ifor bach
30th November 2009
By Rory Wilkinson
Going to this gig I was unsure of what to expect. I do like 'The Magic Numbers' and know their music pretty well but I've never been too fussed about going to see them. The first thing that surprised me was the size of the crowd. The top floor of Clwb was packed out with a real mix of people eagerly anticipating the band's return and the happy atmosphere that is synonymous with them seemed to have already captured the crowd.
The point of this tour was to promote their long overdue new album (about 3 years in the making) but this bout of new material failed to impress the seemingly fickle crowd, most using the opportunity to head to the bar. It's not that the songs weren't good and performed well, it's just that people were to reminisce, about sunshine and festivals and all the other happy things that 'The Magic Numbers' entail. The old songs though were received very warmly, so much so that the band gave two encores, one of which I'm sure was spontaneous!
The best thing about this gig though is that whatever happiness and excitement is shown by the crowd , it is doubled by the band members. The fact that they take so much pleasure in playing their music means that you can't help but smile as you witness it. You can really start to see why they write the songs they do, and why they are always a must for festival line-ups!
And so that's how on one of the coldest nights this year in Cardiff the top floor of the Welsh Club was basking in mock sunlight! The Kings and Queens of summer happiness have returned to their thrones.
