What is the Purpose of School Representative?

The purpose of School Representatives is to represent views of students and the StARs which represent them to your school, and the University.  They assist the Students' Union in providing an effective course representative system, co-ordinating representation within their school and provide effective feedback to the SU at its monthly meetings.

The School Representative holds a key role for both the University and the Students’ Union.  Under the direction and resources of the Students’ Union, the School representative will deal with more wide ranging problems that occur across the School they represent.  This is an extremely important role as it ensures that, through the representative, all students have an input into areas such as programme content and delivery, assessment and feedback, learning and teaching, and timetabling.

The School Reps hold strong working relationships with key academic and support staff within their school and with officers and staff within the Students Union.

The role of the School Reps is to represent the views of the students within their School to the Students Union and academic staff at student/staff liaison committees.  This means that they are the main channel through which students can exert a measure of control over their own learning experience.

They ensure the student voice is heard at a higher level to StARs.  Their main responsibility is to identify the issues and concerns of the student body by consulting with them on a regular basis, and then relaying this information back to the Students Union and the academic school.  This is usually done by attending student/staff liaison committee meetings, though some issues are dealt with informally.  After the meeting, the reps report back to the students to keep them informed of what’s going on in the department.
