What are societies?

Societies are groups of students brought together by a common interest. They organise a massive array of trips, activities, events and social gatherings and are all run by students on a democratic basis. Almost every possible interest can be catered for by UWIC SU so why not set up your own. It only takes 10 students to start your own interest group.

You can do anything from playing the lead in your favourite musical to curry appreciation, from Buddhist meditation to re-enacting battles, the choice is yours. All you need is ten like minded people to support the society being set up and you’re away!

Why join a society?

Clubs and societies have always played an important role in the student experience with many social and career benefits being gained by being involved in societies. Societies are a fantastic way to meet people with similar interests. Many people find that they make their best university friends through joining a society and it’s a great way to meet people outside your halls, course and even from another campus. They also provide a unique opportunity to try something new, often for a bargain price. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to salsa, or explore Wales’ caves then there is no better time. You can also develop skills that you already have.  Helping to run a society is a fantastically valuable experience, prized by future employers, and all the support you could wish for is available through UWIC SU.

Student activities are as diverse as the students who organise them, which means that the possibilities are endless for new societies.

Some examples of potential societies:

Photography Society, UWIC Entrepreneurs, Student Action for Refugees, RAG (Charitable Fund-raising), Course societies, Music societies, Sports clubs (Non competitive / Social). Religious Societies
