► You Said, We Did

<<Back to Advice & Representation home // UWIC SU Homepage

The students' union and the university is constantly recieving feedback from YOU, the student. This is recieved in a variety of ways; directly to the Saabs, via your school reps and StARS, in school committees or via email and covers a wide range of issues (including academic and social matters).

Every penny you spend in the union bars/shops e.t.c is re-invested back into improving the services that are on offer to you. It is therefore vital that we take into account your feedback, and act on it. This page is designned to inform you of changes that have been made in response to your feedback, within the union, your schools and the University

                                School of Art and Design

You Said We Did
Work and personal belongings are being damaged or stolen at the HG campus Tighter security at HG. More 'safe places' to store work.
Some engineering students complained that they should not be paying lab fees, and did not understand where the money was being spent.  Many engineering students have now had their lab fees refunded, and no longer have to pay them.
Lack of books in the library relating to Art & Design courses.  More books have now been ordered.
Creative communications equipment is not being used to its full potential More equipment has now been bought that can be used in conjuction with exsisting equipment to optimise its use

School of Education

You Said We Did
Lack of inductions for some courses, so problems with using resources, searching e.t.c.  Individuals or small groups can go directly to staff to recieve training, larger groups can attend organized sessions.
Problems with inductions is particularly evident with part time courses who are on campus for a limited time  A cooperation with part-time lecturers and staff is being investigated to organize suitable time slots.
One of the teaching/ rehersal rooms used by drama students is constantly being disturbed due to its location.  More students and lecturers in the surrounding area have been asked to keep disruption to a minimum.

 School of Health Sciences

You Said We Did
Communication between staff and students is not always effective Introduction of new representation system (StARS), there are now student reps on all school committees that affect students.
The move of the business school has caused unrest within the health sciences department, as students do not know what effect the new building will have on the campus and on their school.  The design boards and plans of the new building have been released earlier so that students can see exactly what benefits the new building will have.
There is nowhere to get fresh water on the Llandaff campus.   A new water fountain has been placed on the campus so that students can get free drinking water

      School of Management

You Said We Did
The amount of time allowed for module selection at the start of the year is too long, allowing students to swap and change modules, causing confusion.  This proccess has now been changed in preparation for next year.
There are no printers that allow you to send files directly via email or laptops.  The possibility of getting a printer that works on WiFi is being investigated.
Certain book, journals and e-journals are needed for the library at Colchester Avenue  A fund was given to the CA library, this was allocated in-line with student feedback
Inconvenient start time of a paticular workshop The time of this workshop has now been altered.
Photo design software is not available everywhere The possibility of extending the licence of this software is being investigated

School of Sport

You Said We Did
Complaints have been made about the freshers' compulsory sports kit  Changes have now been made to the School of Sport kit for the 2009 Freshers
Russel Rees gym is often too cold  Heating in Russell Rees has now been fixed, and is in use when appropriate
Year 1 Psychology lectures have been cancelled with no prior notice  Since the matter has been raised, no more psychology lectures have been cancelled
Catered students often miss meals due to other commitments. They also miss meals they have paid for while in Brecon If students know they are going to be late due to other commitments then they can request that some food be put aside for them by speaking to a member of staff. They are also able to request a lunch for when they return from Brecon.
The First year of Dance students to attend the Brecon Beacons trip really enjoyed It is now compulsory for all first year dance students to go to Brecon

General/Student Union

You Said We Did
The Student portal can be difficult to use and doesn't do everything students need it to do  A working group was set up with student representatives from all schools and staff from the IT department to discuss what a student wants from the system. This information is being used to develop a student system best suited to the requirements of the student body
International students are not always involved within the union  A new international representative will start working with the SU next year. They will aim to introduce more events/societies/services for the international students, as well as promoting exsisting SU services throughout the international student body
There is not enough help/support available for students who set-up a society  A new student society handbook has been introduced, that contains information on how to run a society e.t.c. This can be downloaded from the website.
Freshers week contains too many alcohol related activities More non-alcohol related activities are being planned for next year
Communication between students and staff is not always effective Introduction of the new representative system (StARS) which has helped to develop stronger links within the university between students and staff

If you have any feedback or changes that you would like to see happen, then please get in touch. The first point of contact for any school-related issues (whether academic or social) should be your school rep. They can then take these points forward to the student-staff liason committees within your school. The list of school reps can be found here.

Any other issues, or any feedback in relation to the Students' union should be raised with the sabbatical officers, or via email to: studentunion@uwic.ac.uk
