Training Times - Committee Profiles - Fixtures and Results - UWIC AC Coaches

UWIC Athletics Club has enjoyed growing successes in recent years and continues to offer great opportunities for UWIC students of all abilities. Past members include Olympic Long Jump Gold Medallist Lynn Davies, and 2009 World Championship Finalist David Greene.  With over 100 members, the club is very popular and provides an outstanding environment for competition, training and socialising.

Competing for UWIC AC

UWIC AC attracts international performers from across the county and offers the chance for UWIC Athletes to compete on their doorstep with the Grand Prix Series based in the National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC).  With no 1st/2nd team structure, UWIC AC offers all members the opportunity to travel and compete at all levels of competition (i.e. RAF Invitational in Sheffield), and in doing so, the opportunity to achieve your personal goals.  Additionally, if it’s a level of competition you’re seeking, a large selected team of athletes will perform against world class talent on show at the BUCS Championships, the Celtic Cup (UWIC v Wales v Scotland v Ireland), and the Inter-Varsity Challenge.

UWIC AC have a strong tradition of success at major university championships (BUCS Championships Indoors and Outdoors), with many of the medallists going on to compete for their respective country.  At the 2009 BUCS Championships, UWIC AC achieved 4 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, and 10 Bronze Medals.

Training with UWIC Athletics

All members will be offered the same opportunity to train with our dedicated coaching team.  Our event specific team of coaches includes Olympian Nigel Bevan, UK Athletics High Performance Coach Darryl Maynard, Director of Athletics and Commonwealth Games representative Scott Simpson, and former Director of Athletics Sean Power, among many others.

UWIC AC has an 'all standards welcome' attitude, offering members the opportunity to train with some of the top athletes in Britain, local club athletes, and beginners keen to take up the sport.  Athletes can make use of the facilities, and access the ‘athletics-only’ gym in NIAC on their own accord.  Our strength and conditioning coach will induct new gym users and provides workshops throughout the year.

UWIC Athletics Club members have the luxury of free access to NIAC throughout the week!

Social life with UWIC Athletics

With the vast majority of athletes meeting and training under the same roof, UWIC athletes create a very sociable and enjoyable atmosphere.  New students get a chance to have fun and meet other club members at our annual 'Ultimate Track and Field' competition, where teams compete in the Backwards 200m, Headlong Long Jump, and 60m Under Hurdles among others.

The Freshers' Initiation always proves to be a great night for all involved. Drinking is never forced but, of course, forfeits go to the best/worst fancy dress. Other socials are hosted throughout the year and many athletes go on to make their best university friends through the club and their activities.
