About the UWIC Athletic Union

The Sports clubs, supported by UWIC Students’ Union are co-ordinated through the Athletic Union and administered by a full time administrator Ian Campbell. This includes all British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and National League sport. Everything you ever wanted to know about our sports clubs can be found from Ian Campbell in the UWICSU offices in Campus Centre, Cyncoed. Ian can put you in touch with the officers of any club, or even help you set up your own. You can either call into the office or phone on 2041 6953.

UWIC recruits a great deal of sporting talent every year and the Student and Athletic Unions aim to provide a quality service for our sports people. We fund the provision of coaching and provide the excellent sports facilities that you will find on the Cyncoed site. Here we have an outdoor athletics track, international tennis centre, astro-turf multi-purpose pitch and state-of-the-art gymnasia. At the Llandaff site a gymnasium is situated in the amenities block. We aim to support individuals and teams who have to travel long distances for competitions and fund all those in representative teams.

UWIC has become a powerhouse in university sport, and we can this year boast being British University Champions in Women’s Football, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Rugby Union, Trampolining, Boxing, Rowing, Rugby 7-aside as well as being the 1^st British University to hold a European title by winning the European University Men’s Rugby 7’s title. No small feat, considering the size of the Institution compared to Loughborough, Bath and Birmingham, Oxford and Edinburgh who finished above us.

How to join the AU

Membership of a club is open to all students at UWIC, irrespective of the Course or Campus they are studying at. We do not concentrate solely on providing sport for those at Cyncoed or on Sports Courses, but all students are invited, and welcome, to join the Athletic Union Clubs. It is unfortunate that the best facilities are on the one site at Cyncoed, but investment at the site has guaranteed first class facilities.

The Athletic Union funds over 25 sports clubs, which includes paying BUCS fees and transport costs. All of the clubs below enter BUSA competition, but many also compete in National Leagues, a status which makes UWIC the forerunners in University sport. Information and contacts for all of these clubs can be obtained from Ian in the Athletic Union office, Cyncoed (029 20 416953).
